With sole survivor Robert Nevillie spends most of his days in isolation as he battles to find a cure, felt so devastatingly real.

As the main theme of loneliness and repetition soon leads to depression shows how much we crave human interaction.

Learing the fate of Robert's wife and daughter is even more tragic. The vampire's added a nice monster element to the narrative that otherwise would seem so bleak, Robert's urge to find a solution does at least offer some hope.

This is without doubt a classic, but some might find it too upsetting at the moment. View all 6 comments.

I Am Legend, Richard Matheson It was influential in the development of the zombie-vampire genre and in popularizing the concept of a worldwide apocalypse due to disease.

Robert Neville appears to be the sole survivor of a pandemic that has killed most of the human population and turned the remainder into "vampires" that largely conform to their stereotypes in fiction and folklore: they are blood-sucking, pale-skinned, and nocturnal, though otherwise indistinguishable from normal humans.

Implicitl I Am Legend, Richard Matheson It was influential in the development of the zombie-vampire genre and in popularizing the concept of a worldwide apocalypse due to disease.

Implicitly set in Los Angeles, the novel details Neville's life in the months and eventually years after the outbreak as he attempts to comprehend, research, and possibly cure the disease.

Swarms of vampires surround his house nightly and try to find ways to get inside, which includes the females exposing themselves and his vampire neighbor relentlessly shouting for him to come out.

Neville survives by barricading himself inside his house every night; he is further protected by the traditional vampire repellents of garlic, mirrors, and crucifixes.

Weekly dust storms ravage the city, and during the day, when the vampires are inactive, Neville drives around to search them out in order to kill them with wooden stakes since they seem impervious to his guns' bullets and to scavenge for supplies.

Neville's past is occasionally revealed through flashbacks; the disease claimed his daughter, whose body the government forced him to burn, as well as his wife, whose body he secretly buried but then had to kill after she rose from the dead as a vampire.

Everyone else has been infected with a virus that causes vampirism, but for some reason, Robert is immune. He spends his daytime hours securing his house, staking vampires, and trying to discover a cure for the virus.

At night he hides indoors while the vampires, some who are his former acquaintances, try to break in. The thought, for example, of having free access to anything you want, including cars, jewelry, clothes, houses, art, scientific equipment, and every book in every bookstore and library in the world is exhilarating All those things are almost meaningless outside of their social context.

We all know that humans are social creatures, but none of us has actually experienced a total lack of companionship. What would it mean to rule the entire world alone?

Matheson writes so powerfully about these emotions. The story is called I am Legend because Robert Neville gradually comes to realize that vampires, the creatures he thought were only legend, are real.

Now, Robert Neville, the elusive human being who vampires fear, has become the legend. This is one I will listen to again. By the way, I am Legend is not a full-length novel, so some versions include additional stories in a collection called I am Legend and Other Stories.

The views of the time when the book was published show in the writing: his lust-problem with vampire women no masturbation, really?

Four fifths of the way through and the only thing on my mind was how incredibly boring and one-dimensional Robert Neville is.

You would think that someone forced into solitude and surrounded by death and insanity would have a wonderfully colourful and twisted mind - if you're going to have a book revolving around a single character, make him a really good one.

So, it wasn't until he began chasing, abusing and kidnapping a woman in the name of science everything in this book was tunnel-viewed 'i Four fifths of the way through and the only thing on my mind was how incredibly boring and one-dimensional Robert Neville is.

So, it wasn't until he began chasing, abusing and kidnapping a woman in the name of science everything in this book was tunnel-viewed 'in the name of science' and dismissed any other possibilities and ways of thinking that I let my imagination take over the plot.

I Am Legend is actually unintentionally Nabokovian. Robert Neville is a delusional psychopathic woman killer safe in his fantasy world of vampires and violence where he presents himself as the last vestige of rational thought.

Closing himself off and leading a hermitic life, he spends his time dreaming about killing the filth of humanity who haunt his dreams and bitterly reflecting on his "wife", a woman who he was unhealthily obsessed with and murdered when she became a "vampire" ie he realised that she was not his misogynist vision of an inferior, man-worshipping, overly-emotional cretin lower than a dog who he treats with more respect.

One day, he finds, abuses and kidnaps a woman and locks her in his bedroom and she tries to win her freedom through seduction though in the end finds that hitting him over the head is more effective.

He gets arrested and is made to face what he has done, his victim even developing Stockholm syndrome, but further retreats into the safety of his self-deceptive mind where he twists the conventions of the world to point himself out as a legend, the last macho, narrow-minded, patriarchal "real" man.

I give this book an extra star from all the fun I had trying to salvage something interesting and in the wise words of The Smashing Pumpkins: "The world is a vampire, sent to drai-ai-aiiiiiin" This is another one of those times when there are people who if they could would give this book far more than the allowed 5 while if I were rating it on "enjoyment alone" I'd be looking to give it negative stars.

I turned the first page of "I Am Legend" with zero knowledge of what Hollywood did to it because a friend of mine gave me an important warning.

He said: "When it comes to this story, there is no movie; there is just the book". The story is Robert Neville's, the last man on Earth after a strange plague has turned every other human being into a vampire.

He lives in a carefully barricaded house, stuffed wi Let me being this review by saying that I never saw any of the movie adaptations of this book.

He lives in a carefully barricaded house, stuffed with canned and frozen food, books and records, as well as a hothouse full of garlic.

He spends his days in the same monotonous way: making stakes and roping up garlic cloves on every possible entrance to his refuge.

When he's not doing that, he's using up all his stakes to kill the sleeping vampires in their dens. His nights are spend listening to the vampires crawling around his house, fighting among each other and trying to lure him out.

He's kind of on the edge of going insane when the book begins: this has been going on for 5 months, and he's fraying at the seams.

He manages to hang on to sanity when he decides to approach the vampire situation from a scientific point of view: catch one of them, get some of their blood, study it, try to find some sort of vaccine or antibiotic to cure the disease that took away everyone he loved.

This goal carries him forward, until the day he finds himself face to face with someone else who can walk in the day time.

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the prose: Matheson is succinct, but also very elegant, and he does built dramatic ramp ups of tension when you least expect it.

He also conveys Neville's emotions very well: his paranoia, his heartbreak, his frustration I won't spoil anything, but there's an obvious lesson in this book: to the "monsters", the "good guy" is a murderer.

But more than the simple morals message, the thing that really stuck with me was the atmosphere of decay, paranoia and white-knuckle resistance to madness.

It would be so easy for Neville to give up: all he has to do is walk out of his house after sundown and his struggle is over. But he resists, he holes up, he fights back.

The so-called twist can have more than one meaning: the importance of perspective, sure, but also the futility of fighting something so big it can never, ever be defeated.

I also loved the way this book is a very self-aware vampire story. Neville gets to wondering what the deal is with the stakes and the garlic, and can't find any rational reason for their effectiveness.

This little wink to the absurdity of the legends was a really nice touch of dark humor in what could have otherwise been a way too serious and depressing book.

If you like vampire stories, this is a classic that you shouldn't miss! A quick, but riveting read with a great ending.

I still haven't watched any of the movies, and frankly, I don't intend to. Yet again, I've been breaking the rules.

This time, it wasn't on purpose! But I went into reading I Am Legend knowing the ending, knowing the twist.

Years ago, you see, my husband had wanted to talk about the book, probably when the most recent adaptation to movie form had come out, and I am well known for not reading horror, so it wasn't an unreasonable assumption that I would never read this.

So, wrong, in the long run, but it made reading this for the first time a very different experience tha Yet again, I've been breaking the rules.

You can read why I came to this decision here. In the meantime, you can read the entire review at Smorgasbook The Last Human 23 March I first heard about this book because somebody decided to make a movie with the same title with Will Smith as the lead role.

Well, when I saw the trailers I certainly felt that it looked quite interesting, especially since he seemed to be driving around a completely empty New York City.

In fact, I sort of wonder whether that is what New York City is like these days. Melbourne certainly does seem to be much emptier than usual, and while I sort of would like to catch a The Last Human 23 March I first heard about this book because somebody decided to make a movie with the same title with Will Smith as the lead role.

Melbourne certainly does seem to be much emptier than usual, and while I sort of would like to catch a train into town just to look around, a part of me feels that maybe staying at home is a much better option though I am sure to do that sooner or later, even if only to do some grocery shopping — if I can find any groceries.

Yeah, this seemed to be a rather ironic book to start reading in this day and age, with a disease ravaging the Earth and people literally hunkering down in their homes, with pretty much everything but the essential services being shut.

One thing that struck me, not from this book, but from the lighthearted banter that is flying across social media, is a list of movies that one can watch during a pandemic.

Well, if you have seen the films that have been based on this book, then you probably know about this book anyway. So, we have this guy who is the only survivor after a plague pretty much turns humanity into a pack of bloodthirsty vampires.

Well, sort of, and not quite, if the end of the book is anything to go by. I guess the thing that stuck in my mind is how Zizek suggests how the whole concept of the book has been changed over the years to completely turn away from the original premise.

In a way, this book is about change, and in a way, it is about social change. Sure, Matheson uses the idea of a horde of vampires taking over the world, but in another sense, it is about how one way of life is slowly subsumed by the other.

Take for instance the idea of the First Nations of the Americas. When Europeans arrived there was a thriving society but over the years they were slowly, and surely, completely wiped out.

All that remains are small pockets of individuals on reservations killing themselves with alcohol. This is also the case here in Australia, and is especially true when you wander through Sydney.

The reality was that there were over a thousand nations living on this continent, but the First Nations here have simply been reduced to people playing digeridoos, and making boomerangs.

In fact, they have also been relegated to the idea of unsophisticated hunter-gatherers who needed European assistance to be able to advance, not that we did all that much in the first place.

In fact, many of the First Nations people have simply been subsumed into our society, and their culture has been completely lost. So, yes, this is actually a confronting book, that exposes the nature of how humanity has the ability to simply wipe out and destroy cultures, sending them into the realm of legend.

When the story had action scenes, they were done very well, and there is a wonderfully suspenseful and thrilling chase scene in the first half of the book.

Many of his friends and neighbours have succumbed to these blood sucking beasts, but there must be more to this existence. As time progresses, Neville turns scientific and discovers some of the microbiological aspects of the plague, as well as how it spreads from host to host.

Neville uses this knowledge to work on some sort of defence, in hopes that it will allow him the chance to push back and take his life into his own hands.

When another human crosses his path, he passes along all the information he has, hoping it is not a Trojan Horse sent to trick him.

In his own mind, Robert Neville is a legend for cracking the code, though the reader may feel otherwise. However, before trying this book, I did dabble into his world when I read a short piece by the author, which inspired Stephen King and one of his sons to use it as a launching pad for a more modern piece of horror.

In this story, Matheson shows off some of his eerie side, though I did not get the scare factor I hoped to find.

Robert Neville came across as quite level-headed, at least as much as he could be under the circumstances. His limited backstory came out through the pages of this book, though I was not connecting to him as much as I would have liked.

There are glimpses of other characters in this piece, which Matheson develops when the need arises. They help complement Neville, but do not leave a lasting impact for me.

The premise of the piece was decent and I would have loved to feel more connected to the entire situation, but I found it was half horror and half cerebral, neither of which drew me in when I needed it most.

I hope others find this was chilling and highly entertaining. Kudos, Mr. Matheson, for this piece. The world is in ruins.

The vampire plague has claimed all human life. Except for Robert Neville; mankind's lone survivor.

This is a classic hard-hitting case of "it's not you, it's me. In hindsight, I Am Legend is an astounding work of dystopian fiction, a classic example of a tale of post-apocalyptic survival in a grim and horrifying future.

I wish I realised that while I was reading it. Unfortunately, I could never get into it. It The world is in ruins. It took me what seemed like an eternity just to creep slowly toward the half-way point.

I just never appreciated the story or the characters well, to be fair, there is mostly just one character as much as I probably should have.

Then the last few chapters were so astoundingly good that I feel like I have to read the entire thing again to give it the love it probably deserves.

The haunting ending alone is enough to warrant a re-read. Maybe not immediately, though. Quickly he pushed a metal wagon up and down the silent, dust-thick aisles, the heavy smell of decay setting his teeth on edge, making him breathe through his mouth.

I have not seen the film yet but the title is very apt, if a little on the nose, perhaps. The above quote is an example of the feeling of loneliness that pervades throughout the narrative.

However, Neville realizes he is being watched by the Darkseekers all over the buildings. As he approaches Fred's body, he is ensnared in a trap similar to the one he used to capture the female; by the time he escapes, the sun is setting and he is attacked by infected dogs.

Neville and Sam eliminate them but Sam is bitten during the fight. Neville injects her with a strand of his serum, but when she shows signs of infection, Neville is forced to choke her to death before she turns.

Heartbroken and driven by rage, Neville ventures out and deliberately attacks a group of Darkseekers the following night before he is rescued by a pair of immune humans, Anna and a young boy named Ethan, who have traveled from Maryland after hearing his broadcast.

Neville, unfortunately, denies this and argues that no such survivors' camp exists. Neville adjusts the potential cure and injects the female Darkseeker.

Neville draws a vial of blood from the woman he cured and gives it to Anna, before shutting her and Ethan inside a coal chute in the back of the lab.

Neville then takes a grenade and kills the Darkseekers at the cost of his own life, saving the cure.

The next day, Anna and Ethan arrive at the survivors camp in Bethel where they are greeted by military officers and other survivors before Anna hands them the cure.

Anna narrates how Neville's effort and sacrifice to save humanity ultimately became legend and people should take inspiration from him.

During the lab attack, the alpha male makes a butterfly-shaped crack while attempting to break through the glass to the laboratory.

The butterfly reminds Neville of the butterfly-shaped tattoo on the female Darkseeker and he realizes that the alpha male is trying to recover his mate.

Neville puts his gun down and returns the female. Neville and the alpha male stare each other down, where Neville apologizes to the latter after seeing tears roll down the alpha male's eyes.

Akiva Goldsman decided to move the story from Los Angeles to New York City to take advantage of locations that would more easily show emptiness.

Lawrence went to the city with a camcorder , and filmed areas filled with crowds. Then, a special effects test was conducted to remove all those people.

The test had a powerful effect on studio executives. Filming began on September 23, Patrick's Cathedral. Will Smith said, "I don't think anyone's going to be able to do that in New York again anytime soon.
